Fer talks about Koni-chan for a while

Todays’ deck is the Eternal Bones Tarot.

A deck of decorative skulls. Pretty cool but kinda vague when it comes to parsing the cards.

Today’s reading advices that while a time of prosperity comes, balance and responsability should be kept in mind.

Any of you ever heard of Dotto! Koni-chan?

It’s a Shaft anime (yes, THAT Shaft) from 2000 directed by Nabeshin (yes, THAT Nabeshin). It’s a madcap comedy based around Koni-chan, the then-mascot of magazine “The Television” (ザ・テレビジョン).

From this listing

Koni-chan, by the way, is actually based on real Sumo wrestler Konishiki Satokichi (yes, THAT Konishiki Satokichi).

Now, this by itself would already be an overload of Curiosities… but what if I told you this anime that’s so obscure I can’t find the existence of an 8cm CD or any other goods was super popular in Latin America?

I was there.

I know it because I loved it.

That video up top was the first time I ever saw the opening in Japanese, the one I knew was this one:

The video on top I found on a Xitter account that posts old anime openings and wouldn’t you know it, the first comments I saw were in Spanish.

NOT ONLY THAT but in doing the most cursory of searches, the Pixivpedia’s featured image WAS SOMEONE’S DRAWING IN SPANISH.

So to recap: We’ve got a pre-Monogatari and Pre-Pani Poni Dash Shaft anime, directed by Nabeshin, based on a magazine mascot that’s based on a real sumo wrestler, that gained a cult following in Latin America.

I love to bring this up when people ask me if anime is popular in Latin America. It’s one thing to bring up the public viewing of Dragon Ball, but it’s another to bring up Koni-chan and King of the class Yamazaki, they’re like curses that prompt some to go “HOW WOULD YOU KNOW ABOUT THAT?!”.

My day itself didn’t have much novelty going on which is why I kept thinking about latin american cult classics.

Speaking of which, there’s no better example of what that overlap entails than this photo.

I’m not even gonna explain it, if you know you know.

Jokes aside, I’ve been thinking about buying a folding bed for visits.

I haven’t had guests complain about the bed mind you (if anything that’s the one things that has gone without comment), it’s more thinking about the storage factor while not being used.

A folding bed of the kind that bends in half and is stored vertical would be easier to maneuver and store than a bunch of futons that gotta bend in three parts. Not to mention that I can just keep it in a corner near a wall instead of it needing to be in a closet that I could use for other stuff.

Beyond that, I’m just letting hyperfocus take the wheel on random stuff to shift my sleep schedule forwards.
