Today’s deck is the Ghostbusters Tarot.
I feel like Ghostbusters is my generation’s Monty Python. A seminal piece of really good cinema that has been run to the ground by overexposure… but at least Monty Python got overexposed by college-aged nerds, Ghostbusters got overexposed by Gen Xers that got into positions of power at studios and tried so desperately to make it a thing.
You don’t even need to look at the 2016 one, Ghostbusters was fumbling the ball as early as the second movie and the cartoon and that was back when it was still relevant instead of some piece of 80s media they tried to force into the Stranger Things bandwagon.
Neil Cicieraga’s Bustin’ has been unironically more culturally relevant for longer, it feels like.
Today’s reading advises to not make critical choices and such while exhausted. I actually heeded the advise and didn’t go to singing lessons today. The reason this time was that I needed to pick songs for the next recital on February and I haven’t even had time to THINK about it.
Fittingly with regards to movies, I’ve been going through a book called Oscar Wars about the history of the Academy Awards and the Academy itself, a book that seems to have implicit intent that the whole thing has been self-congratulatory since its very inception.
It’s still a super interesting read regardless, though. One of my favorite bits is all the reactions against movies with sound, with arguments like “if you see a painting of a tree shaking in the wind you don’t need to hear the wind to appreciate that”, and problems at the core of the industry like actors not having diction training.
Also that one bit where the Screen Actors Guild was formed and was criticized while the Academy wasn’t because one is a group of powerful people and the other is the bottom ringer fighting to protect themselves.
Wish there was more to say but there really isn’t. The title comes from the fact that I spent most of the day doing bank paperwork and such.
There’s a trip in the horizon though… and by Horizon I mean A Couple Of Days Away.
