How to NOT collab

Today’s deck is the Summer Holiday Tarot.

This is what I call a b-tier deck. Basically a deck that would be a-tier if not for a small technical element (in this case the backs). s-tiers by the way, are a-tiers with the subjective element of me liking them.

That said I’ll highlight one cute addition it has:

You’ve heard of The Fool’s Journey, get ready for The Fool’s Boarding Pass.

Today’s reading is the second day in a row where the cards reflect a highlight of the day, so let’s talk about it.

Here’s a tip: If you’re looking to collab with others start small. Build the rapport. If things are going well, then matters will escalate naturally.

Do NOT open the collab conversation with basically “so we wanna add you all into our release strategy including content made by you guys”. Especially not when the side asking the collab is doing that for their first release ever.

On a superficial note it’s just… rude, and on a cynical note it’s asking for a lot as an unproven group.

It’s a bit like being invited to someone’s house and opening up with “yeah, I’m gonna need you to fix this door while you’re here”.

And as much as I want to be like “oh it’s just fans being overzealous and too excited”, we’ve had to deal with people just riding our coats since day one. Quite a few of them using precisely that excuse of just being fans, excited fans.

Eventually things de-escalated from there but… that’s the problem, isn’t it? Something that had to be “negotiated down” is never healthy in this context.

Anyway, today’s reading feels tied to me needing to write a long ass message explaining to those people why I wasn’t comfortable collabing with them anymore.

“The act of doing what must be done is painful but necessary for things to move along.”

Thank God it all caught me while I was having yakiniku. Lord knows how mean I might’ve been on the wrong day.

I do feel bad though, it already sucks to turn down collabs, but to fans?. But again, the fact that I don’t feel fully safe assuming they’re just excited fans rather than one fan and a higher echelon seeking to boost themselves is basically why things are the way they are…

On moments like those I need to remind myself of all the people that have pointed out how easy/lax we are to collab with, and that maybe MAYBE if we don’t vibe with someone the problem isn’t us.

My day was mainly Japanese lesson and then going to Evil for a couple of drinks, but sadly the timing didn’t line up. Then I’ve got an interview tomorrow at about the same time and they don’t open back up until Monday.

Oh well. There’ll be other chances.
