Miyakojima 2026 Day 1

It ain’t an adventure unless this bitch is extremely sleep deprived!!!

Today’s reading is basically pointing out that if there’s something I can’t do, there will always be another chance.

As you’ll see, a very fitting portent.

Well, I say that at the start but the sleep depravation is more of the “I woke up super late and didn’t sleep” variety.

This time the flight takes off from Itami and I can’t remember last time I went to Itami specifically, in fact, I completely forgot how close it is to my house. Where it’s like half an hour through regular trains instead of hour and change in an express that might not be there immediately when I go to the station.

I don’t know why I say I forgot, I suffer a shitton of planes flying over on the daily. I’m like 90% sure it’s the reason why the wifi at my place sucks.

I would say I got too cocky with the time I left home, but really I left on like the second train of the day. The only problem is that I don’t remember much of Itami so I got slightly lost.

In that sleep-deprived state I grew uneasy when I saw a sign that said how you can’t check in laptops… what they meant is that you can’t check in laptops on their own, they need to be inside luggage.

I’m sure there’s one hell of a story behind that sign.

Luggage checking goes smoothly but then the security bit delays me big time. The reason? I forgot the smallest foldable scissor was on my backpack. It was so small that even after deliberately emptying my backpack I still didn’t feel it there.

They tell me I cannot have them on and I tell them to keep them because I was delayed, so delayed in fact that I didn’t get to eat anything.

I just hoped I would conk out the moment I got into the plane… which is exactly what happened. I nod off and next thing I know I’m nodding awake from the plane landing.

The moment the plane landed all the windows fogged up too and dear God the humidity.

The vibe is so different from last time, though… all the shops are open for one, but also there’s actual cabs waiting outside, last time I was in line waiting for a cab right behind two nuns, they got a cab in like 10 minutes and I got one in 20 while no app worked.

Speaking of apps, this cab driver didn’t have a GPS so he told me to tell him where to turn after a certain point. Thankfully the path was mostly straight.

I get to the place and it’s nice but in that moment I cannot think about how nice it is because falling onto the bed took priority.

After a couple of hours knocked out, I get out of bed and start taking stock of the place and also getting out some shorts and whatnot. That’s when I notice that I forgot to pack the smart telescope, which is extra aggravating because this place has a rooftop I could’ve used!!

The baffling things don’t end there though, as I find TWO camera flashes. Now, I know I had two because years ago I thought one was broken but turned out to be a software thing instead of a hardware thing (and in the middle of a trip so I felt the urgency to sort the matter out), but I didn’t know where the hell said second flash was in my apartment… well lo and behold I found it I guess.

Back to the vibes being different, places are actually open and until decent hours, I’ve seen so many shops that were just not available at all last time that I’m definitely gonna keep an eye on.

On the whole, the first day went on smoothly enough. I always count first days for trips as a non-day, so to speak. If I’m out for five days then it’s only three days in practice as the first one is to settle in and the last one is to return.
